We Are Doing Something Right...

We pray.  We aren't great about it, but I can guarantee two times a day my kids hear us pray.  

We pray each night before dinner and we pray every night before bed.  It is the same prayer each night at dinner and a different one for bedtime.  Cohan has his bedtime prayer memorized and can do it on his own.  He needs a little help with the dinner one.  Ireland obviously can't talk, but does hear the same prayers at meals and her bedtime.

Tonight, however, something awesome happened.  We were all chatting as we sat down to dinner.  The second the last person sat down at the table, Ireland made a noise to get our attention.  We all looked at her.  She had the biggest smile on her face and sat in her chair folding her hands.  She was ready to pray.  My cup runneth over.  We were so proud of her.

Even though we don't make it to church every weekend, even though my kids might not go to Catholic school here, even though we aren't the most religious people, our kids know to pray.  

I couldn't be more proud.  

I read a sign last year.  It said something about waking up one day and only having the things around you that you had thanked God for the day before.  It made me think... maybe we aren't thankful enough.  We don't have the best of the best of things, but we sure are blessed.  We have a home, our health, and amazing family and friends.  We are so blessed, so we added a thank you prayer to our bedtime routine nightly.  

Hearing Cohan talk about praying at his preschool has warmed my heart.  One of my favorite things about his bedtime routine is listening to who he adds to pray for at the end of our prayers.  I should be better about telling those people when he has added an extra prayer in for them.  

We aren't perfect parents by ANY means.  I'm sure we are doing tons that our kids will blame us for later in life.  But tonight, watching my kids pray, I knew Scott and I were doing something right.
